Cabinet cleared abrogation of Article 370 in J&K in ‘just 7 minutes’

The cabinet meeting that cleared the proposals for revocation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir lasted “just seven minutes”. Union home minister Amit Shah’s introduction of the Article was greeted by loud applause from the ministers present. Earlier this week, Parliament cleared the BJP government’s proposals to strip Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, and divide the state into two Union territories. The decision to bring the issue to the Rajya Sabha first, where the BJP government does not have a majority, was a carefully thought-out strategy to take the Opposition by surprise. After US and UK’s support, Russia has asked India and Pakistan to prevent deterioration of the situation in Kashmir, as it backed the Article 370 move carried out "within the framework of Constitution". Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday said, "We hope that the differences between them will be resolved by political and diplomatic means on a bilateral basis." Russia said while maintaining that the country is a consistent supporter of the normalization of relations between India and Pakistan.
