US maintains a stand of non-interference in Kashmir dispute

The US on Friday said that there is no change in its policy on Kashmir and called on India and Pakistan to maintain restraint. The U.S. policy has been that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.“ We support direct dialogue between India and Pakistan on Kashmir and other issues of concern", a U.S. State Department spokesperson said. India had on Monday revoked provisions of Article 370 to take away Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, and bifurcating the state into two union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. U.N. chief calls for ‘maximum restraint’ on Kashmir dispute, invokes Shimla Agreement

U.N. chief Antonio Guterres on August 9 urged India and Pakistan to exercise “maximum restraint” and refrain from taking steps that could affect the status of J&K. The Secretary-General’s remarks came post India's revocation of Article 370 and bifurcation of J&K into two Union Territories. Pakistan termed the Indian action as “unilateral and illegal”, and threatened to take the matter to the U.N. The Secretary-General referred to the 1972 Shimla Agreement on bilateral relations, which states that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir is to be settled by peaceful means in accordance with the UN Charter.
