In big boost to Centre: SC refuses to intervene in J&K, says Govt must be given time

Hearing a petition on Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to intervene in the matter and pass any order. The court, however, noted that the current situation in J&K was "very sensitive" and the government should ensure that there is no loss of life. The court’s observations have come as a big boost for the Central government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which abrogated Article 370. Stating that the Union government must be given some time to restore normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, the top court posted the matter for hearing after two weeks. Src:https://bit.ly/2Z61n2x

Maharashtra government is set to initiate a task force to study the impact of climate change in Mumbai. This monsoon, the city received unprecedented rainfall. The trend of short bursts of torrential rainfall is an indicator of the disastrous effects of climate change. The task force will study measures taken by cities like London, Venice, and Geneva, and prepare a plan for Mumbai which will include flood management. It will be set up in coordination with the state environment department and Mumbai First, a non-profit organization. The task force will work on taking pro-active measures. Bombay HC Approves Maharashtra’s Maratha quota but reduces it to 12-13%

The Bombay High Court on Thursday upheld the constitutional validity of reservation for the Maratha community in government jobs and education. However, the quota percentage will be reduced from 16 to 12 or 13 percent, as recommended by the State Backward Classes Commission. The court was hearing a bunch of petitions challenging Maharashtra government’s decision granting a 16 percent reservation to the Maratha community. The reservation will be in addition to the existing 52 percent overall reservation. The government means to alleviate the Maratha community, which it considers socially and economically backward.
