Supreme Court on Deciding the Disqualification of Karnataka Lawmakers: Depends on our self-restraint

Karnataka Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on Tuesday asked the Supreme Court to rescind its directive that stopped him from deciding the disqualification of the 16 rebel lawmakers. Kumar also questioned the Supreme Court’s powers to intervene before the Speaker took a decision. He claimed that it would be destructive of the constitutional scheme. “The exercise of jurisdiction of this court depends on the extent of self-restraint we have. SC to Maharashtra Government: Maratha reservation is not backward looking

The Supreme Court on Friday said that the Maharashtra government’s order giving reservation to the Maratha community will not be retrospective even while issuing a notice to the state government. The government had notified the reservation policy to ensure forward-looking constitutional validity since 2014. The Bombay High Court has upheld the reservation given to the Maratha community but brought down the percent of reservations from 16% to 12-13%. All actions taken with respect to the High Court order will depend on the outcome of the Supreme Court. Src: https://bit.ly/2JxgAWb

SC has awarded death penalty to the Rohtak gangrape accused

Seven death row convicts who gang-raped and killed a mentally challenged woman in Rohtak got an interim stay on their execution from the Supreme Court on Thursday. The accused raped the Nepali woman and dumped her mutilated body in a field in Rohtak, Haryana, on February 4. Stones and razor blades were found in her stomach. The trial court had earlier convicted and awarded death penalty to the accused. In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court sought to avenge the victim. Hang the rapists is something I advocate strongly, do you also?
